In today’s day of age, our cell phones are our life . With all the new technology available to us, we are literally able to control our life with our fingertips. According to Pew Research , 90 percent of American adults have a cell phone. As you can see, we can’t live without them! However, these devices house all sorts of information, and police are trying to use them for criminal investigations.
However, according to WFAA , as of this Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that cell phones and smart phones cannot be searched without an issued warrant. When the law comes down to privacy vs. investigating crimes , privacy rights take the gold by a landslide.
This new ruling is based off two recent cases in California and Massachusetts. These two cases were completely different except for the fact that neither police officers in both cases obtained a search warrant before going through the suspects cell phones, which contained incriminating evidence.
With all this new technology being available to us, it is getting harder and harder for the government to protect its people under the Fourth Amendment. Do you think it’s more important to protect our privacy, or do you find it more important to catch criminals? These are both hard decisions that have left the government going back and forth. It will be interesting to see how much farther technology will push the law.
