When I think about the law, the first things that come to mind are freedom, patriotism, justice, and gray vs. black and white. Too often we hear people complaining about the laws, which I would admit are not perfect, but are put in place to protect its citizens from the chaos of mass destruction. Years ago, our founding fathers agreed that it was important to limit some of our personal freedoms in order to establish a common ground for the greater good of all our community. Our founding fathers were right to install this system of justice.

However, as I said before, the law in not always black and white; there is some gray as well. Sometimes the laws become blurred lines and right and wrong turns into half right or half wrong. Also in correlation, laws are never really set and stone. With the new technology, laws are evolving into newer ones. Who knows, maybe they may change a little in a few years. So what do we do when we get in trouble because of these constant changes in the law?

The first thing we need to consider is finding someone who is passionate about the law to represent us. There are thousands of lawyers out there, but how do we find the right one? Well I have the solution. Some of the most important things to consider are: Experience, Passion, Trust, and Knowledge. A person who contains all these characteristics is our very own Tim Powers. As I interviewed Tim, I was blown away with how passionate he was about his job. He said it’s hard not to be passionate about something you love to do. In my interview with Tim, we got down to the real important stuff.

I asked Tim what interested him most about the law and he said “There are really two things. It is ever-evolving. Thus it takes a lot of continued research to keep up with the changes in legislation and how the courts interpret those changes. I also find it interesting that the most well intentioned law can have some ridiculous consequences.” This is in fact really true with the law and is helpful to understand when dealing with cases.

There are so many laws out there; some of them you wouldn’t believe are actual laws! I asked Tim what he thought was the most interesting to him. “There are scores of interesting laws. I find some of the nutty statutes to be the most interesting. For example, it is illegal to serve shark fins in soup in Delaware,” admitted Tim.

Tim has made his passion for establishing justice his job, but to him it is more. It is about helping out those who cannot help themselves. He has worked hard to become the lawyer he his today. He never took for granted all the amazing opportunities he had to intern at the many places he did. He is really grateful for all his opportunities and “enjoys being in court daily.” His advice to anyone who has a passion for the law is to “Read a lot and work as hard as you can in undergraduate school. There’s a great deal of competition to get into law school. There truly is a glut of lawyers in the US, but there is always a place for good ones.”
