Twelve-year-old Tamir Rice died after being shot by a police officer in Cleveland. The police officer fired two shots after the boy disobeyed orders to raise up his hands. According to the reports, Rice was carrying an airsoft gun that appeared to resemble a semi-automatic pistol. When asked to raise his arms, Rice resisted and reached for the gun from the waistband of his trousers. He was taken to the hospital and died the next morning.
According to the 9-1-1 recording , the man who reported the incident claimed that Rice was a juvenile that was holding a possible fake pistol. The two officers that showed up on the scene were not aware of the caller's comments. One of the officers that were involved in the incident had been on the force for over 10 years and the other officer was rookie- first year on the local force.
This incident will defiantly receive a lot of backlash with the recent Ferguson Missouri case and the new verdict inticating the officer would not be indicted. As a result of this case, citizens are beginning to protest and riot.
Although the facts are totally different -- Rice having a fake gun, which according to the officer appeared real -- I think the Ferguson riots will certainly cause a great deal of reflection for the Cleveland authorities on how they manage the evidence on the case. Hopefully they will get the community more involved in the process instead of keeping them guessing and get evidence out in the public arena for all to see so that a Ferguson does not repeat itself.
