It looks like Christmas came early for about 3,000 prisoners at the Washington state prison. In July of 2002, there was a state Supreme Court ruling that "required the Corrections Department to apply good- behavior credits" in the county jail to the state prison sentences ( McCallister ). The problem with this ruling was the fact that it gave prisoners too many good- behavior credits allowing for these prisoners to be freed early.
This situation has caused a lot of animosity between victim's families and the Department of Corrections. Families of the victims are upset at the fact that the convicted are being accredited too many credits which minimizes the sentence by a large sum. In order to prevent this injustice, the Department of Corrections in now having to calculate the time served, good- behavior and time left by hand until the coding programs are fixed and implemented.
When dealing with these situations, it is important to be fair and accurate. Accidents happen, but the fact is that this incident has been brought to their attention since 2002 and we are going on to 2016. It should not take this long to fix this situation. What do you think?
