Since the early 1980s, the U.S. government has been cracking down on crime both large and small. As citizens we may see this as a good thing; however, by doing so we have failed to see the problem caused by putting every single person behind bars.

According to the American Legislative Exchange Council , "The United States currently incarcerates one in nearly 100 American adults." With this being said, overcrowding in prisons has been a huge problem. Recently, the U.S. Sentencing Commission has made an effort to prevent overcrowding in prisons by passing a law that will take place Oct. 30- Nov. 2. Approximately 6,000 inmates will be released at this time which is the largest amount of prisoners released at one time.

Approximately two-thirds of the prisoners will be put on home-confinement of in halfway houses. According to the Washington Post , the other one-third of prisoners are foreign citizens and will be deported as soon as they are released.

The reason for these releases is due to the fact that mass incarceration has failed. By changing these laws, new sentencing guidelines will be put in place that will minimize sentences. Current prisoners could face reduces sentences due to this or even be released. The U.S. is doing this in hopes of relieving overcrowding and making sure serious offenders end up in prison.
